Vocabulary Post



1. Justin listens to loud obnoxious music on a loud and obnoxious station where loud and obnoxious DJ's make loud and obnoxious jokes as a way of getting through the morning. p.3
Definition: exposed to something unpleasant or harmful, odiously or disgustingly objectionable :  highly offensive, deserving of censure.
The boy in my class was being really obnoxious when I asked him a question about his book.

2. As I take Justin's books out of his locker, I can feel someone hovering on the periphery. p.4
Definition: the outside edge of an area : the area that surrounds a place or thing.
I could see my brother in the periphery of the mirror.

3. I am a drifter, and as lonely as that can be, it is also remarkably freeing. p.7
Definition: a person who moves from one place or job to another without a purpose or plan.
My dad was a drifter until he met my mom, then everything changed.

4.  The unwarranted devotion. p.9
Definition: a reason to not think, decide or do something.
The unwarranted love to someone clearly uninterested.

5. The hope tinged with doubt, and the doubt tinged with hope. p.9
Definition: to give a small amount of quality to something
The strike was tinged with desperation

6. That giddy rush of keeping up with one another, of zooming through the school, reducing everything that's not us into an inconsequential blur. p.10
Definition: of little or no importance; insignificant; trivial.
The homework was inconsequential in comparison to the provincial exams.

7. I have wandered for so long without any sense of  purpose, and now this ephemeral purpose has been given to me. p.11
Definition: lasting but one day.
the love that we had was ephemeral.

8. Reaching the tide to catch at shells before they ebb away from our fingers. p.14
Definition: a flowing backward or away.
The sunlight ebbed as the day ended.

9. A sensation that can only come from the most euphoric of feelings. p.22
Definition: intensely happy or confident.
When I finished the race I had the most strong feeling of euphoria.

10. I think, perversely, that Rhiannon would want me to. p.45
Definition: persistent or obstinate in what is wrong.
I thought perversely in answer to the monitor's demand to pick up the garbage. 

11. Shocked and maybe a little contrite. p.46
Definition: caused by showing sincere remorse.
I thought he was a contrite sinner in the way he attended church.

12. You are given a hierarchy, recurring characters. p.52
Definition:  A system of persons or things ranked one above the other.
Our country is based  on hierarchy not equality.

13. I try to hold on to a few mundane, everyday memories. p.53
Definition: of or pertaining to the world universe or earth.
I very few mundane ideas for the in class essay.

14. I am a typical, unforthcoming teenager. p.147
Definition: uncooperative
I was as unforthcoming as a kid that needs to go to the dentist.

15.The injustices perpetrated against him. p.193
Definition: to commit.
The suspect had indeed perpetrated the robbery.
